Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University Faculty of Health Sciences Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation faculty member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murat Tomruk stated that the spinal health of individuals who work at a desk for long periods or spend a lot of time on their mobile phones is seriously threatened.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tomruk emphasized that musculoskeletal system disorders, defined as 'hidden body problems' today, are rapidly increasing, and said that one of the main reasons for this situation is the misuse of the body.
“When we move without knowing what the correct posture is in daily life, we can unknowingly harm ourselves. This can range from back, neck, and shoulder pain to posture disorders; many problems related to the muscular, skeletal, and nervous systems.” he said.
Healthy posture is possible with simple rules
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tomruk pointed out that correct posture habits are extremely important to prevent such problems.
“It is necessary to sit upright, stand without leaning forward, and avoid slouching by extending the legs. Also, when picking something up from the ground, we must squat by bending the knees and avoid leaning forward. Even these simple habits can reduce pain.” he used the expressions.
Technology has brought new posture disorders
Tomruk stated that with the intense integration of technology into daily life, new posture disorders have emerged, especially highlighting mobile phone usage:
“Constantly holding the mobile phone in hand and looking at the screen by bending the head forward puts a serious load on the neck area. The weight of the head increases several times in this position and damages the spine and muscles. Therefore, it is very important to hold the phone at eye level, approximately 30–35 centimeters away.”
“Small awareness brings great benefits”
Tomruk concluded his words by stating that using the body correctly not only reduces pain but can also prevent orthopedic and neurological problems that may arise in the future: “With small awareness, it is possible to lead both a healthier and more comfortable life.”
