The reality of earthquakes in Burdur was once again put on the table in the light of scientific data. In the program held within the scope of the "Science Cafe" meetings organized by the Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University Science Communication Coordination, the city's building stock and earthquake safety were discussed in all aspects.

The event, organized in memory of the anniversary of the May 12, 1971 Burdur Earthquake, was held in the meeting hall of the AFAD Burdur Provincial Directorate. Associate Professor Dr. Hakan Ulutaş, a faculty member of the Civil Engineering Department of the Faculty of Engineering-Architecture, who participated as a speaker in the program, made important evaluations regarding the current state of the buildings in the Burdur city center.

Ulutaş particularly pointed out that buildings constructed before the year 2000 carry serious risks. He noted that low material quality, inadequate inspection processes, and engineering errors stand out in these structures, emphasizing that structural irregularities such as "strong beam–weak column" could increase damage in a possible earthquake. He also stated that the inconsistency of floor levels in adjacent buildings could lead to a pounding effect.

Touching on the fact that new buildings are not completely safe either, Ulutaş said that especially heavy overhangs and widely used hollow block slab systems could pose risks. He underlined the need to adhere more strictly to engineering principles in construction processes.

A large number of people from different professions, including architects and civil engineers working in Burdur and surrounding districts, attended the event. The program concluded with the message that it is of vital importance to renovate or strengthen especially the old buildings in the city.
