At the ÜNİLİG Yeşilay Wrestling Turkey Championship held in Burdur, the host Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University achieved significant success. MAKÜ athletes competing in freestyle matches drew attention by winning 3 gold and 2 bronze medals.
The championship, held between March 28 – April 1, 2026, was conducted with broad participation from across Turkey. While 606 athletes from 63 universities participated in the organization, approximately 750 sports delegates, including coaches and administrators, gathered in Burdur. The competitions held on the MAKÜ campus were an important meeting for university sports.
On the second day of the championship, the host team stood out. Umut Talha Uslu in 74 kg, İsmail Küçüksolak in 86 kg, and Harun Kılıç in 92 kg reached the gold medal, while Ahmet Yücel in 61 kg and Melikşah Kuru in 125 kg obtained bronze medals.
In the team rankings, Gaziosmanpaşa University took first place, while MAKÜ took second place. Gümüşhane University took the third place on the podium.
Ahmet Şahin, a faculty member of MAKÜ Faculty of Sports Sciences and wrestling coach, emphasized the importance of the success achieved in his evaluation after the organization. Şahin stated that the team completed the championship with three gold, one silver, and two bronze medals in freestyle, expressing that they won the silver cup with the team second place.
Şahin, stating that the athletes are young and goal-oriented, said that their main aim is to represent Turkey in the best way at the European, world, and Olympic levels. Noting that they have a busy schedule ahead, Şahin mentioned that they aim to send athletes to the organization to be held in Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, within the scope of the FISU World University Championship.
Additionally, Şahin stated that the University Games to be held next year are among the important targets, adding that if they participate in the wrestling branch, they believe they will represent both the university and Turkey in the best way.
