MAKÜ's artificial intelligence model ranks in the top three at CERN

Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University (MAKÜ) has achieved another significant success in the international scientific community. The artificial intelligence model developed by the university's faculty members secured third place in the FPGA Compression Hackathon competition held at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) located in Geneva, Switzerland.
The event took place at CERN, considered the world's largest particle physics research center, from July 8-10, 2026. The event focused on accelerating artificial intelligence models on FPGA-based hardware in particle physics applications, developing real-time data processing techniques, and innovative solutions for edge deep learning applications.
During the event, MAKÜ was represented face-to-face by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Osman Tayfun Bişkin from the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, while Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ali Çelik from the Department of Physics participated online.
Throughout the hackathon, participants worked on developing artificial intelligence models that could operate with high performance on FPGA hardware. While participants were offered the opportunity to develop and test multiple models in the competition, the number of models that could be uploaded to the system was limited by a certain threshold. A total of 182 different models were evaluated during the event.
The models were evaluated based on criteria such as accuracy rate, performance, compression success, latency, and efficient use of hardware resources on FPGA. The model developed by MAKÜ researchers achieved significant success at the international level by ranking third in all evaluations.
The organization held under the auspices of CERN also contributed to strengthening international collaboration among researchers working in the fields of artificial intelligence, particle physics, and hardware acceleration.
This achievement by MAKÜ faculty members at CERN, one of the world's most prestigious scientific centers, once again highlighted the university's international research capacity and competence in artificial intelligence and advanced technology.
