A panel on 'Ethics in Academic Life' was organized by the Academic Ethics Society of Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University. The event took place in Avşarhan, moderated by Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Hakan Öner. At the panel, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Volkan Savaş Genç and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gökmen Arslan made their presentations.
The program started with a moment of silence and the National Anthem. In his opening speech, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Hakan Öner emphasized the importance of preventing academic honesty and ethical violations. Öner said, “It is important to establish academic honesty and scientific ethics in higher education and developing an ethical culture in academia should be the top priority. If there is no academic honesty, individuals and institutions in the academic world lose their credibility and reputation. Therefore, a university should not tolerate academic irregularities and misconduct.”
Dr. Savaş Volkan Genç from MAKU Veterinary Faculty, in his presentation titled 'The Adventure of Ethics, From Where to Where', explained the historical development of the concept of ethics and its importance today. Genç said, “The point where ethical questions arise is when a person knows himself. Ignorance is the source of today's ethical dilemmas. Ethics examines value problems in human relations and is a condition of living humanely.”
Faculty of Education faculty member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gökmen Arslan, in his presentation titled 'Why Do We Violate Ethics? Psychological Foundations of Ethical Violations', discussed the psychological reasons for ethical violations and gave examples from experiments.
The panel ended with Prof. Dr. Hakan Öner presenting certificates of appreciation to the panelists.
This event was of great importance in terms of reminding and encouraging the application of ethical rules in the academic community.
