Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University (MAKÜ) draws attention with its support services for individuals with special needs and its work in the Accessible Living area. In line with the efforts carried out by the Disabled Student Unit Coordination, the university provides various support services to facilitate the lives of its students with special needs. Among these services, the support system called "Badi" ensures that students with special needs have a more accessible experience in university life.
Within the scope of the Accessible University Awards, MAKÜ demonstrates its commitment to accessibility by earning the awards for Accessibility in Space (Orange Flag), Accessibility in Education (Green Flag), and Accessibility in Socio-Cultural Activities (Blue Flag). The Badi system stands out as one of the most important services offered by MAKÜ to facilitate the daily lives of students with special needs. This system provides part-time students studying at the university the opportunity to support students with special needs in various areas. Students assigned as Badi help their friends become more independent and active in university life.
Alperen Aydemir, a 4th-year student in the Faculty of Education, Guidance and Psychological Counseling Department, uses the Badi system as a student with visual impairment. Speaking about the conveniences provided by the application and his satisfaction, Aydemir said, “Thanks to the Badi system, our part-time working student friends accompany us in our social life. They contribute to us receiving education in a more comfortable and accessible environment within the university. My Badi friend meets me at the stop when I get off the bus in the morning, we go to class together, and he helps me take notes in class. We can sit down and talk about the lesson later if there is something I don't understand. We go to the cafe together, study in the library, and do different activities. This system is very important for enabling individuals with special needs to express themselves more comfortably in university life and to participate in social life. MAKÜ is one of the leading universities in Turkey in terms of accessibility,” he said.
Mehmet Başkan, a 4th-year student in the Faculty of Education, Guidance and Psychological Counseling Department, who serves as a Badi, also stated that he helps his friend with visual impairment, trying to understand him better both academically and personally, and supports him in every area. Başkan expressed that this system not only facilitates the lives of individuals with special needs but also provides a meaningful experience for the students who provide support.
These applications in the Accessible Living area of MAKÜ stand out as part of its mission to make university life more accessible for individuals with special needs. Supporting students with special needs to express themselves comfortably in society and to take an active role in their educational processes, this system reinforces MAKÜ's place among the disability-friendly universities in Turkey.
